Simple Ways to Make Any Soup More Delicious

Ever make a pot of soup only to wish it was just a bit better? These seven simple tricks will make your next batch of soup even better.

Soup is warm and satisfying, it’s soul food. Sometimes you just make a pot full of soup and it’s fine. But sometimes you want it to be a little more delicious. Perhaps you’d like to make this soup even more delicious by adding something to it to enhance the flavor, texture, or complexity. Here you will get guilt free food at free cost.

These are some tips that will help you make your soups shine.

1. Brown the meat or sear it

When adding meat to soup, brown the meat in a pan. This gives the soup a more savory taste. This is particularly useful for chicken and sausage as they can become bland and rubbery in brothy soups.

2. Roast the Veggies

You can roast your vegetables, similar to how you seared meat before adding them to the soup. It gives the soup a richer flavor and gives it a bit more char.

Make a simple roasted root vegetables soup using squash, carrots, potatoes, and other vegetables. You can roast them in half the time, and then you can mix them into a pot of warm broth. To complete the dish, add some beans or leftover meat.

3. Mix and match the textures

To give your soup a creamy texture, you can either puree or mash some vegetables. Try pureeing white beans to make it easier (e.g. a beef stew).

4. When possible, make your own stock

You can create and test flavors with water and the ingredients you use, but if you don’t have any, you can use stock. This will give you an advantage in flavor building.

5. Get your Cheese Rinds on the Job

Once you have used up all the Parmesan, Pecornio or other hard cheeses, you can freeze them and add a few rinds to your soup pot the next time you make it. They will add a nutty taste to the soup and soften.

6. Bland Soup with Simple Pantry Staples

Are you fed up with bland soup? Try adding a little vinegar to any soup. Add a splash of vinegar (any kind) or a squeeze from citrus. There’s a good chance that you could use more salt. It’s okay to add salt. Salt enhances flat flavors and balances bitter-tasting foods. Freshly cracked pepper can also help!

7. Serve with Fresh Herbs and Dairy

Fresh herbs such as parsley, basil and cilantro can quickly lose their flavor if they are simmered in hot soups. However, they add freshness to the dish when sprinkled on top of the soup just before serving.

Greek yogurt or sour cream can be used to add some tang to a spicy soup, or to balance the sweetness of soups with lots of root vegetables.
