Original Joes

Where did I eat?

Original Joes at 294 Robson Street in Vancouver.

What do they specialize in?

Burgers and casual dishes.

What was the vibe?

Casual, pub-style, restaurant.

What did I eat?

Guilt and Honey, El Diabla, and Original Joes Blonde Lager

  • I had the guilt and honey which is made with bourbon, amaro, honey syrup, lemon juice and lemon bitters. I loved this drink because it was flavourful and had citrus notes without being too sweet.

A.C.E. Cheeseburger – Two beef patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, and house made burger sauce served with your choice of two sides

  • This was my favourite dish of the night and just a well executed and flavourful simple burger.
  • The two patties I think is what makes it because it is meaty without being too thick and dry and the gooey cheese breaks it up in the middle.
  • I also love how you can choose two sides to go with your burger because I always want a few fries, but I like variety and trying other things.

Dynamite Tempura Shrimp – topped with spicy chili and unagi sauce

  • I was surprised by how good this appetizer was. It is the perfect sharing plate.
  • The shrimp was lightly battered and very crispy, like little popcorn shrimp.
  • I liked that it wasn’t overwhelmed with sauce because it didn’t get soggy and you could appreciate the tempura batter.

Bacon Jalapeno Mac and Cheese

  • I enjoyed how creamy and gooey the mac and cheese was because I prefer this style over the overly baked version with more crisp cheese.
  • I also liked the crunchiness that was added from the panko breadcrumbs, but I wish that the jalapeño flavour was more prominent as I would have enjoyed more spice.

The Grilled Cheese Burger – garlic grilled french bread, cheddar, swiss, provolone, bacon, shredded lettuce, tomato, and crispy onions

  • This burger was massive and had a much thicker patty than the first one we had.
  • While I enjoyed the super cheesy flavours from this burger I found the bread to be too soft for my preferences and I preferred the A.C.E. cheeseburger.

Disclosure: I did not pay for my meal.

Final Thoughts?

I was impressed with the A.C.E. cheeseburger and I would come back here for a burger and drinks.
