I was recently sent a bottle of the Famous Grouse to feature on my blog in a holiday recipe. The Famous Grouse is a blended scotch from Scotland that is ideal for mixing in cocktails. This whisky has a medium bodied flavour with sweet fruity notes.
My favourite seasonal holiday drink is eggnog so I decided to make some homemade eggnog featuring the Famous Grouse. Eggnog is typically made with bourbon, but I find that the sweeter flavour of this Scotch works well for eggnog as it doesn’t have the smokey peaty flavour of many other Scotches.
I was inspired by Alton Brown’s aged eggnog recipe, however I made several variations to suit my own tastes including reducing the proportions of sugar and adding a bit more cream. The good thing about this recipe is that the high alcohol content keeps it from spoiling so you can make a large batch and put it in a sealed jug and drink it all throughout the holiday season.
- 12 egg yolks
- 1 cup of sugar (I prefer my eggnog and cocktails to not be very sweet, but if you have a sweet tooth you can double the amount of sugar)
- 2 cups of heavy cream
- 3 cups of half and half
- 3 cups of whole milk
- 1.5 cups of the Famous Grouse scotch
- 1.5 cups of rum (I used the Baron Samedi spiced rum)
- 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
- Separate egg yolks into a bowl and whisk in sugar and nutmeg until dissolved.
- Combined all of the liquor and milk ingredients into a bowl.
- Pour the combined liquids slowly into the egg yolk mixture while whisking to combine.
- Pour into a sealed container and refrigerate. You can drink this immediately or allow it to sit in the fridge for a few days to let the flavours mingle.
