Ken’s Chinese Restaurant

Where did I eat?

Ken’s Chinese Restaurant at 1097 Kingsway in Vancouver.

What do they specialize in?

Chinese food.

What was the vibe?

Typical banquet style Chinese restaurant.

What did I order?

Golden Dungeness Crab

  • The “golden” crab was covered in an egg yolk batter which gives it the golden colour
  • The batter was very rich so you probably don’t need to eat more than a couple of pieces of the crab
  • This was my first time trying a crab prepared this way. It was good, but not something I would order on a regular basis.

Crab with Garlic and Spicy XO Sauce

  • This version of the crab is more of what I am accustomed to and wasn’t quite as indulgent as the golden version
  • The garlic and chili toppings were good and went well with the crab.

Lobster with Konnyaku in Hotpot

  • The lobster meat was good. I am normally never disappointed with lobster dishes in Chinese restaurants.
  • The sauce was very simple and didn’t have a lot of flavour. It allowed the taste of the lobster meat to stand out, but I wouldn’t have minded an extra punch of spice in there.

Braised Pork Belly

  • This was one of my favourite dishes because pork belly always turns out good.
  • The pork was cut into large chunks of super tender, fatty, pieces of meat
  • The sauce was savoury and sweet and would be good served with rice to soak up all the extras.

Pan-Fried Chicken Filet with Spicy Thai Sauce

  • This dish was a bit strange and not something I would consider “Chinese” food
  • The sauce was a sweet chili sauce and tasted like packaged sauce you can buy at the grocery store
  • The chicken itself was quite tender and good though. The sauce was just too overpowering for me.

Black Pepper Diced Beef Tenderloin

  • This was a simple, but well executed dish.
  • The beef tenderloin pieces were large, juicy, and tender.
  • The black pepper sauce was flavourful, but not too overwhelming or strong.

Ken’s Specialty Chicken

  • This was like Ken’s version of Hainanese chicken. It was okay, but not exceptional and I think the chicken could have been more tender.

Malaysia Style Fried Rice

  • I like my carbs, so I really liked this fried rice dish.
  • The rice was flavourful and had bits of garlic, green onion, meat, and egg dispersed throughout

Baked Seafood Rice

  • I liked the creamy, cheesy sauce that covered the dish
  • I found the seafood got overcooked from the baking process

Fish Soup with Winter Melon and Dried Scallop

  • I found the soup to be quite mild and boring and probably not something I would order at a restaurant.

Disclosure: I did not pay for my meal.

Final Thoughts?

The food at Ken’s was decent, with the seafood items standing out the most, however, it wasn’t anything too out of the ordinary or worth making a special trip for.
