Lin Chinese Cuisine

Where did I eat?

Lin Chinese Cuisine at 1537 West Broadway in Vancouver.

What do they specialize in?

Shanghai style Chinese food.

What was the vibe?

Loud, crowded, no-frills atmosphere.

What did I order?

Smoked Fish

  • I have had various smoked meats and seafood before but never a white fish
  • The fish was dry, but had a nice balance of smokey and soy flavour to it

Shanghai Vegetables and Pressed Tofu

  • This isn’t a dish I would typically order as I am not crazy about ordering cold dishes
  • It didn’t have a lot of flavour and I found it to be dry and boring

Xiao Long Bao

  • The dumplings were probably my favourite thing of the night and I wish I could have eaten a whole basket to myself
  • The dumplings were a good size, not too large or small, and were very juicy

Green Onion Halibut

  • This was another favourite dish of mine for the night
  • The halibut was flakey and moist and the green onion sauce was delicious

Honey Prawns

  • These prawns were cooked well and had a snappy texture and crispy fried coating
  • The honey coating was good, however, it is quite strong and sweet and I would get overwhelming if you ate too many

Chef Special Supreme Hotpot Soup

  • This soup was stuffed full of a lot of random ingredients
  • The broth was light and refreshing after many heavy saucy dishes, however, I don’t think this soup is flavourful enough for me to go out of my way to order

Braised Pork Ribs

  • The sauce was thick and indulgent and was like a sweet and sour sauce with more depth
  • The pork meat was fatty, tender, and delicious
  • This would be good with a side of rice to absorb some of the sauce

Tea Smoked Duck

  • I have never had smoked duck before and I enjoyed the rich salty flavour of the meat.

Shanghai Spicy Tofu Hotpot with Seafood

  • I was surprised by how much I loved this dish and it ended up being one of my favourites of the night
  • It was super flavourful and had some kick to it, which I enjoyed because I like spicy food
  • The combination of prawns, fish, and squid with the soft melty tofu was delicious

Shanghai Vegetable Rice Cake

  • I normally love rice cakes, however, I think I like them pan fried in a more flavourful sauce
  • These were tossed with a chopped Chinese vegetable (not sure which one) which was quite bitter tasting

Eight Treasures Sticky Rice

  • This dessert didn’t really work for me and I wasn’t into it
  • It had an overwhelmingly sweet syrupy flavour that over saturated the rice

Disclosure: I did not pay for my meal.

Final Thoughts?

Throughout this dinner there were some hits and misses, which for me averaged out into a good but not great dining experience. I would eat at Lin Chinese again, but only order the dishes that stood out to me.
