The Halal Guys is one of the most popular food carts in New York that specializes in gyro platters. There are some impostor food carts out there, so be aware that the original cart is located at 53rd and 6th.
The chicken and gyro platter ($6) is their most popular item. It comes with rice, lettuce, chicken, lamb, pita slices and sauce (if you want it).
I found both the chicken and the lamb to be pretty dry and not overly flavourful. It almost tasted like bits of leftover meat all thrown together. I have definitely had better donair meat elsewhere.
The flavour in this dish comes from the sauces, which were both quite tasty. The white sauce is a rich and creamy garlic type sauce and the red sauce is a hot sauce. The hot sauce has a bit of a kick to it, so if you are super sensitive to spice I would skip it, but otherwise I didn’t think it was too overwhelming.
While having some street meat in New York was a fun experience it didn’t quite live up to the hype or my taste expectations. The food is cheap and the portion is large, but taste wise it is nothing special. This is the kind of meal I would order for a novelty, but I wouldn’t return here again.
As an alternative to fast food I would recommend it, but if you want a great meal look elsewhere.
