Basho is a new Japanese cafe that is located on Hastings Street in East Van. They specializes in matcha drinks and desserts, but they also have a full coffee menu and some rice bowls and salads for food options.

I came here recently with Foodology to consume an excessive amount of matcha flavoured items. The inside of the cafe is adorable and one of the cutest cafes in Vancouver. They have the cutest dishes and little random decorations.

I ordered the afternoon set, which comes with a matcha latte and a few mini treats for $5. I thought this was a pretty good deal since you would pay about $5 for just a matcha latte anywhere else and the cup it comes in is rather large.

I loved the matcha latte. It is the best one I have ever had. This version isn’t sweet (although you could probably ask for it sweetened) and it has an earthy grassy flavour. I don’t like sweetened matcha, so I enjoyed the taste of it. The drink itself was also very smooth and the matcha was blended well. I would highly recommend trying this.

The three mini desserts that come in the afternoon set change depending on availability.. I was given a goma miso cookie, a mochi matcha cupcake, and a mochi sesame brownie.

I loved all three of these desserts. The miso cookie was a crumbly shortbread cookie. It actually didn’t have a strong miso flavour at all, it just tasted rich and buttery. The mochi matcha cupcake had the soft squishy texture that I love about mochi. This dessert wasn’t very sweet and it had a more earthy flavour from the matcha. The mochi sesame brownie was my favourite dessert of the day. It was super moist and it had a strong chocolate flavour with the perfect amount of sweetness to it that didn’t make you feel sick.

Since food bloggers like to eat, we couldn’t resist trying all of the other desserts they had available.

The white chocolate matcha brownie was just as moist as the chocolate one, but it had a much sweeter taste due to the white chocolate. I preferred the other one, but if you are a white chocolate fan you will probably love this.

The matcha, coconut, chocolate chip cookie was pretty good. It was slightly more dry than I would have liked, but the abundance of coconut flakes and chocolate chips made up for it.

The last items were the matcha sandwich cookies. I was expecting the cookies to be soft for some reason, but they were also hard shortbread type cookies. These were good, but compared to some of the other desserts they weren’t overly exciting.

I was really impressed with Basho and their matcha lattes. The atmosphere is adorable and the afternoon set is great value. I think it is a great new addition to Vancouver and I will definitely be returning.

Yes, for a great matcha latte and cute desserts.

This is the cutest little japanese cafe in town. Everything here is delish, from home made soups and pastries and carefully made coffees. Just be prepared for a line up if it’s busy.
