Yolk’s Restaurant

Yolk’s Restaurant and Commissary is a restaurant on Hastings in East Van that specializes in brunch and all day breakfast. The restaurant is owned by the same people who run the popular Yolk’s Breakfast Truck that serves gourmet breakfast sandwiches.

Brunch is pretty much the perfect meal, so I am always excited when a new brunch place opens in Vancouver. While Vancouver has numerous great weekend brunch spots, I think the city needs more all day breakfast places that are open during the week as well. I came here on a weekend with my friend a bit before noon and we only have to wait a couple of minutes for a seat, but shortly after that there was a line up out the door.

Double Smoked Bacon Benedict

The menu has a bunch of options where you can either build your own breakfast sandwich or benedict. The  double smoked bacon benedict ($10.75) came on a bed of arugula and was topped with your choice of hollandaise or white cheddar.

The benedict was well prepared with soft poached eggs and a light layer of hollandaise. I probably would have preferred a bit more hollandaise, but having less did allow the flavours of each component to stand out more. The bacon that they used was really good and it made the benedict. It was thick cut, perfectly crisp and really smokey.

Truffle Lemon Hashbrowns

One downside is that the sandwiches and benedicts don’t come with hash browns, so you have to add them to your order and pay extra. The truffle lemon hash browns are worth paying extra for though because they were really good. I liked that they were big chunks of potatoes instead of smaller pieces and they were super crispy on the outside. I didn’t pick up a strong truffle flavour, but the lemon was a nice addition that brightened up the dish. They also serve them with a side of house made ketchup that had a fragrant spice flavour to it. I wish more places made home made ketchup because it just makes the dish that much better.

Steak Sandwich

One of the daily specials was a steak breakfast sandwich filled with onion rings, arugula, stilton, and a fried egg.

This was pretty much the perfect sandwich. The rib eye steak was cut up into small pieces and served medium, so the meat was tender and juicy. I am a sucker for onion rings on sandwiches and I loved the greasy crunch they added. The fried egg and stilton cheese brought everything together by adding moisture to the sandwich and a strong cheesy flavour. If they have this special while you are there, I would highly recommend trying.

I think that Yolk’s is a good addition to the Vancouver brunch/breakfast scene and I was impressed with the food. It is on the expensive side though, but the quality and flavour are there. However I have one small rant about the water situation in the restaurant. The servers don’t refill your water for you and you have to walk across the restaurant to where they have a water dispenser and fill up your cup yourself. I found this to be awkward and inconvenient because I had to walk through a big crowd of people waiting to be seated by the door. This wasn’t really a big deal though, just a slight annoyance and I would still return if I was craving a good brunch meal.

Yes, for a good brunch meal.
