Tractor

Tractor is a small restaurant in Kitsilano that makes healthy “fast” food. Every day they have a selection of soups, salads, stews, and sandwiches that are made with seasonal, local, and healthy ingredients.

The restaurant is cafeteria style, so you can order what you want at the counter and either eat it in the store or get it to go. I work relatively close to Tractor, so I frequently come here when I am too lazy to make a lunch.

Butternut Squash Soup

I like the butternut squash soup ($6) that they have here. It has a pure and simple flavour and it is served with some little baguette crisps on the side. The soup isn’t overly large or filling though, so I would recommend also getting a sandwich or salad with it.

Chicken Sandwich

The chicken sandwich ($9) is served on cranberry bread and filled with grilled chicken breast, tomato, basil, and provolone.

This was a simple and well executed sandwich. The chicken breast is sliced thin, but it is real chicken and not some gross deli meat. The cranberry bread was my favourite part and I loved the hint of sweetness it added to each bite. I also enjoyed the pop of fresh basil in the sandwich.

Veggie Sandwich

The veggie sandwich ($9) comes on multigrain bread and is filled with kale, peppers, grilled zucchini, tomatoes, asiago cheese, and pesto aioli.

Surprisingly, this is my favourite sandwich from Tractor even though I am a big meat eater. I love grilled vegetables and I think the zucchini had the perfect hearty texture that I look for in a sandwich filling. All of the other vegetables tasted fresh and had lots of flavour and moisture.

Winter Quinoa Salad

I love the selection of salads that they have at Tractor. One of my current favourites is the winter quinoa salad ($3.25) made with red and white quinoa, kale, pomegranate, roasted butternut squash, basil, and lemon. This salad is light tasting from the tangy citrus dressing, but still filling from the quinoa.

Winter Kale Salad

Another one of my current favourites is the winter kale salad ($3.25) made with kale, radicchio, borlotti beans, toasted pumpkins seeds, dried cranberries, asiago cheese, and creamy lemon dressing. This salad converted me into a kale lover. I liked the earthy flavour of the greens and the creamy, tangy dressing.

Tractor is my go-to place in Kitsilano for a quick healthy lunch. I love that they make healthy food taste good and they put effort into it and use high quality ingredients. I wish that there were more places like Tractor that gave people convenient fast food alternatives.

Recommendation:

Yes, for a quick, healthy, and tasty meal.
