The New Oxford

The New Oxford is a pub from the Donnelly Group located in Yaletown. Compared to some of the other Donnelly pubs which are pretty generic inside, the New Oxford has a neat ambiance. It is themed like a British pub and it has old wooden furniture, brick walls, and they even play soccer (I didn’t know Vancouverites cared about soccer, but lots of people there were really into it).

I visited the New Oxford a couple of years ago and I had a sub par food experience. The manager recently invited me back to try the restaurant again after they have revamped the menu.

Driftwood Fat Tug IPA

For a drink I had the Driftwood Fat Tug IPA beer. Driftwood is a brewery in Victoria. I’ve heard good things about this beer, so I wanted to try it.

IPA style beers aren’t my favourite, but they are growing on me. It had a strong hoppy flavour and hints of fruity flavours like grapefruit and mango. The fruit flavours weren’t very sweet and it had a slightly bitter flavour to it.

Pub Burger

I was craving a fat burger, so I decided on the pub burger for my lunch. The half pound grass-fed chuck steak patty was thick and juicy. It had a lot of flavour and was nice and moist.

The burger was topped with butter lettuce, tomato, applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onions, and BC farmstead cheddar. I liked that the toppings were simple classic burger toppings, but they were all high quality and delicious. The bacon was thick cut and smokey and the cheese was perfectly gooey. I really liked that they used butter lettuce. I love the texture of butter lettuce and it made the burger seem more gourmet.

The burger bun was fine. I have nothing overly negative or positive to say about it.

The fries were very good. There are so many mediocre fries out there that is it nice when you taste good ones. These were very crispy and provided a good crunch when you bit into them. They were also lightly salted with sea salt.

I enjoyed this experience much more than my previous one. My burger was great, massive, and very satisfying. The ambiance of the place would also bring me back and it would be a good place to have some casual drinks with friends.

Disclosure: I did not pay for my meal.

Recommendation:

Yes, for a cool pub ambiance and a good burger.
