Rumpus Room

The Rumpus Room is a restaurant located on Main Street that has 1970’s themed decor and comfort food. They definitely have a kitschy charm inside of the restaurant. It reminds you of an old person’s outdated basement complete with old board games, tacky ornaments, and worn furniture. They were also featured on the Food Network Canada show “You Gotta Eat Here”.

I came here with Kirsty from Eating with Kirby and Curtis from Foodobyte to try some of their ridiculously indulgent menu items.

Deep-Fried Bacon and Avocado

We all shared a starter of deep fried bacon and avocado ($9.50). And yes, it was as delicious as it sounds.

The bacon was actually better than I was expecting. It was perfectly crisp and not overly greasy. The batter wasn’t too heavy, so you could still taste the smokey bacon flavour.

The deep fried avocado was heavenly. Seriously, why don’t more people deep fry avocados? The batter provided a crispy crunch on the outside and when you bite into it it was all warm and soft. It was the perfect textural contrast and it had a great creamy flavour.

The house aioli and hot sauce were both great dips. They are even better when you mix them together.

Chicken and Waffles

For my lunch, I ordered the chicken and waffles ($12).

The buttermilk marinaded fried chicken was served in little chicken nugget sized pieces. While having chicken served on the bone provides more flavour, this is a much easier way to eat it. I liked how you could cut up little bite sized pieces to cover the waffle with. The chicken had a good crispy texture and was moist on the inside.

Two waffles came on the plate, which was a good ratio to the chicken. They were soft and chewy and soaked up all of the gravy and syrup. I really liked how they gave me both gravy and syrup and I smothered every bite in both of these sauces.

While this meal was good, it wasn’t actually super filling. I kind of wish it came with a side like all of the sandwiches do. Compared to the meal that Kirsty and Curtis had (see below), this plate didn’t have as great a value.

Breakfast Waffle Burger

Both Kirsty and Curtis had the breakfast waffle burger ($14). This is made with a 6 oz home-made beef patty, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and a sunny side up egg all sandwiched between two waffles.

This was a really impressive burger and it was abnormally large. There is absolutely no graceful way to eat this without it falling apart because it is too big to fit in your mouth.

I had a bite of it and it was really good. Fried eggs always make burgers juicy and delicious and using waffles as a bun was a fun and tasty twist.

The Rumpus Room is a fun place to go if you like to try crazy food creations. I enjoy going to places that have weird and unique menu items, so I liked it and I especially loved the deep fried bacon and avocado. If you want to be healthy, do not come here.

Yes, for crazy, indulgent food.

Hehe I LOVE the rumpus room. It’s not the greatest, service or food wise sometimes, but I never regret it. Try the corn dogs next time!!
