Summer is well underway, and one of the most popular activities around Metro Vancouver is visiting the night markets in Richmond. Many of you have already had a chance to go, but if you haven’t gone yet, this comparison guide will help you choose which one to visit.
The Richmond Night Market – 8351 River Road, Richmond
This is the newer market located near the River Rock Casio. This market is larger, but bigger isn’t necessarily better. It also has a cleaner, newer, ambiance. There is a wider variety of food here and this market has more non-Asian food options available, like tacos, lemonade, and deep-fried candy bars. They also seem to have a ridiculous amount of bbq squid stands here.

The Summer Night Market – 12631 Vulcan Way
This is the original location of the night market and it has a certain nostalgic charm that I love. There are fewer stands here, but I still think there is a good variety of food and they have all of the classic/traditional night market snacks. There are multiple hurricane/tornado/whatever potato stands here, so if you like your deep-fried potatoes on a stick, I would visit this location because the waits will be shorter.
- Open from May 10 – Sept 8, 2013
- Hours: Fri – Sat 7:00 pm – 12:00 am and Sun & Holidays 7:00pm – 11:00 pm
- No entrance fee
- Pay for parking (or park up the road for free)
Honestly, I would check out both markets because they each have their own specialties. But I’ve met people who are hardcore fans of both markets, so I don’t think one is drastically better than the other. If you had to choose to only go to one, I would personally pick the Summer Night Market because of the nostalgia factor, the more traditional food, and the free entrance.
