Top Five Dining Experiences of 2012

Since 2012 is coming to a close, I thought I would do a recap of my top five favourite dining experiences of the year. These aren’t necessarily new restaurants, just some of my favourite or most memorable places I’ve visited over the past 12 months.

Aburi Salmon Oshi Sushi

Favourite Upscale Restaurant – Miku

Normally I don’t go to expensive places like Miku, but my parents brought me here for my birthday and it was one of the best meals of my life. Not only does their sushi taste amazing, but every piece is a work of art. This is hands down the most beautiful food I’ve ever eaten. Miku’s sister restaurant, Minami, also opened this year, but I have yet to try it.

Favourite Dessert and Cafe – Forty Ninth Parallel and Lucky’s Doughnuts

This cafe is one of my favourite places in Vancouver because of the cool atmosphere and great products. Forty Ninth Parallel serves up some great coffee and tea and located inside of the cafe is Lucky’s Doughnuts. Lucky’s makes some of the best doughnuts I’ve ever had. They have a bacon apple fritter. Need I say more?

Favourite Cheap Eats – Bao Chau

I know Bao Chau has been around for years, but I was only introduced to this gem by a friend this year.  They make a great bowl of pho and you can get stuffed for less than $10. This is definitely my favourite place to get pho.

Favourite Food Truck – Pig on the Street

This was a hard category for me to choose a favourite in because I also really loved Vij’s Railway Express and Guanaco Food Truck. Pig on the Street was my favourite though because of their love and dedication to bacon. Their bacon wraps are just delicious and they are affordable and filling. They have also just recently opened a restaurant called Pig and Mortar.

Favourite Diners, Drive-ins, and Dive Inspired Restaurant – Rocko’s Family Diner

Most of you foodies probably have never heard of Rocko’s Family Diner place because it is located way out in Mission. I’ve become addicted to this place and have visited it many times over the last few months. I have a soft spot for greasy old school diners and this is the most legit diner I’ve been to. They are open 24 hours, they serve breakfast all day, and they make massive milkshakes and burgers (they have also been open since the 50’s). This isn’t the “best” food around and it is by no means gourmet, but it sure satisfies a greasy comfort food craving.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out these restaurants I would highly suggest visiting them in the new year!
