Szechuan Chongqing Seafood Restaurant First Ocean Wise Chinese Restaurant

Szechuan Chongqing Seafood Restaurant, a Szechaun Chinese restaurant located on West Broadway, is the first Chinese restaurant to partner with Ocean Wise. Ocean Wise is a conservation program provided by the Vancouver Aquarium that works directly with restaurants to help them provide ocean-friendly sustainable seafood options.

Last week Szechuan Chongqing threw a media party to showcase some of their new Ocean Wise menu items.

Sablefish in Chilli Sauce

My favourite sample of the night was the sablefish in chilli sauce. The fish fillet was fried and had a crunchy bottom that added some nice texture. The sablefish was buttery, rich, and delicious. The chilli sauce was a bit spicy, but it didn’t overwhelm the fish. I could have eaten a whole plate full of these.

Spicy Rock Salt Calamari

Another dish that was tasty was the spicy rock salt calamari. The calamari bits were pleasantly chewy and deep fried in a light crisp batter.

Mussels in Szechuan Bouillabaisse

The mussels in Szechuan bouillabaisse were surprisingly spicy. It’s one of those spicy sensations that grow stronger and hit you a few seconds after you eat it. While these may be too spicy for some, I still enjoyed them and thought they had great flavour. The mussels were meaty and fresh tasting and they soaked up tons of the spicy broth they were in.

The new Ocean Wise dishes all tasted great. If you enjoy seafood I would recommend trying out Szechuan Chongquing’s new offerings.

In our view in terms of food and integrity the “Original” Szechuan Chongqing is without doubt the worst Chinese restaurant in town. Apparently it survives by repeatedly issuing internet vouchers promising a certain menu at a set price to get customers in the door – an indication that diners with any sense of taste don’t return for a second experience. The cafe also appears to closely attach itself to the Ocean Wise slogan, which is questionable at first taste. During our last visit we observed that once customers are seated , expecting to choose from the menu outlined on the voucher, they are routinely pressured by serving staff to order one or more :”side” dishes – which in our view and that of surrounding “diners” are vastly overpriced and too inedible to take home.
