Gaya Sushi

Gaya Sushi is a sushi joint located in a small strip mall on Lougheed Highway in Burnaby. They sell your typical Japanese and sushi fare, but the inside of the restaurant is pretty nice and clean. I came here with my friend Melissa before school since it is relatively close to SFU.

We started off with a plate of salmon sashimi ($8.95). The sashimi was cut into large meaty chunks and I was impressed with the size of them. The salmon had a clean fresh taste and it had a pleasing texture. This was some of the better sashimi I’ve had in a while.

We also each got our own red dragon roll ($4.99). The roll has your typical California roll filling, but it is topped with spicy tuna. I enjoyed the added flavour and texture of the spicy tuna on top. The spicy tuna had a bold flavour, but it wasn’t very spicy. The rolls were a perfect size and they didn’t fall apart on you, which is always a plus.

We also split a spicy agedashi tofu ($3.95). The tofu chunks weren’t too large, which I liked because it didn’t get as soggy and it was easier to eat. The batter on the outside was light and crispy and there was a spicy sauce drizzled on top, which had the same taste as the spicy tuna.

Gaya sushi serves above average sushi compared with other places in the Burnaby area. The prices are affordable and the quality of the food was good. It was also cute, clean, and comfortable inside. I would return if I needed a meal in the area.

Yes, for sushi close to SFU.

This place looks like it’s run by koreans. Unfortunately, I haven’t found any korean run sushi joints that can compare with the care and attention given by japanese run places.

Sushimoto’s been on my list for awhile. It’s near Holdom and Lougheed. It’s a small place with a funky sci-fi vibe which can be pricey but they have lunch specials.
