Guu Original

Guu is a chain of Japanese izakaya restaurants across Vancouver and Toronto. Guu is a popular place for drinks and shared dinner plates, but some of the locations also had some great deals at lunch time. I went to the original location on Thurlow just off of Robson for a quick lunch during my break.

Their lunch menu consists of individual portioned rice bowls and bento boxes. I went with their special of the day, which was chopped tuna sashimi rice bowl ($8.50). This also came with a bowl of miso soup.

The tuna was mixed up with green onions and topped with a pile of nori flakes. The tuna was meaty and fresh tasting. I liked the addition of the nori flakes because it added a salty flavour to the dish. At first glance I thought the portion size of the rice and tuna was a bit small, but it ended up filling me up and being the perfect size for lunch.

I enjoyed my rice bowl from Guu and I would definitely return. The casual atmosphere is perfect for lunch breaks and all of the dishes range from $6-$9. The servers were also very friendly, attentive and they kindly ran down the street to give me my jacket that I left behind (which was much appreciated).

Recommendation:

Yes, for a tasty and fast lunch.
