Pho 101

Pho 101 is a small Vietnamese restaurant on Hastings that is pretty close to SFU. I’m not normally in the Hastings area but I was driving to school from Vancouver and in need of some lunch and I found this place. The inside isn’t very large and there are only a few tables but it feels open and clean.

Pho with no meat

I ordered a bowl of pho and a banh mi sandwich because I was super hungry. I got the pho without meat ($6) since I also got a pork baguette. The pho came out piping hot and loaded with noodles. The portion size was bigger than I expected and when I saw how many noodles were in it, I knew I didn’t need the sandwich. The beef broth was aromatic and flavourful and the veggies added a nice texture and flavour to the broth. This soup hit the spot and I would order it again especially because it was so cheap.

Grilled Pork Baguette

I was craving a banh mi sandwich so I ordered the grilled pork baguette ($3.50). I love how cheap bank mi subs are it always impresses me because I feel like they are such good value. In hindsight, I didn’t need to order the sandwich since I was full from the soup but I ended up bringing most of the sandwich to school with me to eat later. The pork was juicy and had crispy grilled bits on the outside. The veggies tasted fresh and the toasted bread was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.

My large and filling meal came to just around $10 and ended up feeding me later too. This place is very affordable and the food is hot and yummy. They have a variety of subs, pho and a couple of rice dishes and I would come back if I was in the area.
