Shuraku

Shuraku is a modern Japanese restaurant and sake bar on Granville street and one of my favourite places to go for Japanese downtown. The inside of the restaurant is dark and nice and it’s a lot more upscale than most Japanese restaurants downtown. I used to come here often for their lunch sets and every time I’ve always had a good experience. They sell lunch sets for reasonable prices and they have a daily lunch deal for $7. The portions are slightly smaller than other Japanese restaurants but the food quality is much higher (try the chicken karaage set it’s so good!).

Chicken Yakisoba

I decided on my last visit to break away from the lunch specials and try their chicken yakisoba ($8.75). I love yakisoba, it’s one of my favourite Japanese dishes because I love the flavor of the soba noodles so I thought it was about time that I tried it here. The noodles came topped with lots of pieces of tender chicken thighs and some carrots, cabbage, and onions. All of the veggies added a slight crunch to the dish and the chicken pieces were juicy and flavorful. The noodles were cooked perfectly and I liked the sauce on the dish. I’ve had yakisoba where they didn’t put enough sauce on or there was way too much and this was just the right amount. It was slightly sweet and not greasy and it allowed the flavor of the noodles and chicken to stand out. This was the best yakisoba I’ve ever had.

Overall I really like Shuraku. It can get quite busy at lunch time so try to go early at 11:45 when they open. The sushi on their lunch menu is a little boring so I always stick to the lunch sets or other hot items and they have always been great. Everything on their lunch menu is reasonably priced and much higher quality than other Japanese in the area.

Recommendation:

Yes for yummy yakisoba and high quality lunch sets.
