Italian Kitchen

On boxing day my family headed downtown to shop and we decided to go to Italian Kitchen on Alberni street for lunch. Italian Kitchen is a part of the Glowbal Collection of restaurants and obviously specialize in Italian. The inside of the restaurant has two levels and is upscale without being too formal.

Kobe Meatballs

I had a bunch of free appetizer coupons from a previous visit to a Glowbal restaurant and we used one of them here. The appetizer special was the kobe beef meat balls (they had the same special at Society when I used the coupon before so maybe this is the only apply they offer with the coupon). They brought out seven of them for all of us and all of the meatballs were topped with a slice of parmesan cheese. I found them slightly dryer than the ones I had at Society but they were still pretty tasty especially with the cheese on top.

Dungeness Crab Benedict

Since they were serving brunch I ordered the Dungeness crab benedict. They brought out a regular benedict and when I told them that I ordered the crab they quickly fixed it for me. I was very impressed with my meal. I recently had my wisdom teeth removed and this was the first real meal I’ve had for a while and I don’t know if that played a part in how good it tasted to me but this was one of the best benedicts I’ve ever had. The eggs were light and cooked perfectly and covered in creamy hollandaise sauce. There was a lot of crab loaded onto the english muffin and it tasted fresh and yummy. I asked if I could get potatoes for my side instead of the salad and I am glad I substituted them because they were so yummy. The fingerling potatoes were crispy on the outside and still had the skin on which I liked. They were seasoned nicely with some herbs and were just all around delicious.

Lamb Sausage Pizza

Burger Knight ordered the lamb sausage pizza minus the mushrooms which comes with peppered goat cheese and egg. He loved the pizza and and he thought the lamb sausage and goat cheese was great. However he felt that egg on the pizza was a bit strange. I had a bite and the goat cheese was amazing and I liked the thinness of the pizza.

Breakfast Pizza

I didn’t have a bite of the breakfast pizza but it looked pretty good. It was topped with bacon, egg, potato, cheese and onions.

Spaghetti with Spicy Kobe Meatballs

The spaghetti with spicy kobe meatballs is served with the same meatballs that we had as an appetizer. This is one of their more popular dishes on the menu and my dad seemed to enjoy it.

Spicy Kobe Meatball Panini

I originally wanted to get the kobe meatball panini but because of my wisdom teeth I couldn’t bite crunchy bread. The panini was stuffed full of cheese, meatballs, and onion rings and it looked really good.

Sweet Pea and Spinach Soup

A daily soup came with the panini and the flavour of the day was sweet pea and spinach. Although the sweet pea and spinach didn’t sound like the most appealing soup it actually tasted nice. It was creamy but light and the pea flavour was fresh and mild and didn’t resemble the mushy thick pea soups out there.

Penne Arrabbiata

I’m not normally into pasta but I tried my mom’s penne arrabbiata and it was quite good. The sauce was made with tomatoes basil and peperoncino (a sweet Italian pepper) and there were bits of  pancetta in it.

Overall everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. I would come back here for brunch because my benedict was great although all of the menu items are a pricier than other brunch places in town. The service was a little underwhelming and they were a bit slow (this has been consistent the last couple of times I’ve gone here).

Recommendation:

Yes, for a special occasion brunch.

I went here just the other day and was unimpressed.
The table beside us got amazing service, vs we had to waive a waiter multiple times to order and for the cheque. Not once to check up on us!
I really enjoyed the veal cannelloni I had a while ago though. I remember it being so good!

Yeah I’ve been here a couple times with my family and the service has always been unimpressive. Once our waiter even forgot that we ordered an appetizer and we never got it by the time our entrees arrived.
