Koya Japan

Continuing my mission to try all the restaurants at SFU I decided to try Koya Japan located in the Maggie Benson Centre. I’m going to be honest, I went to this place expecting to hate it. I had very low expectation for the fast food style Japanese chain and I only went here because I didn’t feel like walking across campus to go somewhere else.

I decided to order a small chicken yakisoba and a drink ($9). I love yakisoba, it’s one of my favourite noodle dishes but I didn’t have high expectations. I came here in the evening so it wasn’t very busy. After I ordered my dish I watched them freshly prepare my dish. I was impressed that it wasn’t premade and just sitting in a warmer for hours. Once I found a seat and started eating I was pleasantly surprised at the dish. It was very hot and fresh and they put tons of big chunks of chicken thighs in it, probably the most I’ve ever gotten in a yakisoba dish. The portion of noodles was huge. I was very hungry when I sat down and I was completely stuffed by the time I finished (and I have a decent sized appetite). Everything tasted really fresh and I didn’t get that sick feeling hours later like you get from other food court food that’s loaded with MSG.

I have had better yakisoba but I’ve also had a lot worse. Koya actually exceeded my expectations and I’m glad I gave them a try. I would stick to their noodle dishes and anything they stir fry fresh and stay away from the sushi (it’s not their specialty)
