Black and Blue Media Opening Event

I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Black and Blue media event opening party last night. Black and Blue is a new steak centered restaurant by the Glowbal Collection that is officially opening today.

The interior of the restaurant is beautiful and luxurious. There are 3 floors with floor to ceiling windows and really cool light fixtures. All of the booths are brown leather and there is dark brown wood everywhere.

The main centrepiece of the room is a massive meat cooler. Someone from Glowbal was explaining that parties can make reservations and they will set aside a selected piece of meat for you and age it to your taste preferences and hang it up. I thought that this was a very cool concept.

There were lots of servers handing out champagne, wine, and some special cocktails. My favourite drink of the night was the french martini which was a mixture of vodka,  chambord, and pineapple juice topped with an orange rind. I love fruity drinks and pineapple so this was right up my alley.

There was a wide variety of delicious bite size food items being served throughout the night. My all time favourite was the shaved beef on top of yorkshire pudding cups with horseradish crème fraîche. The meat was so juicy and tender it melted in your mouth and it had such an amazing flavor. The yorkshire pudding cups were really soft and I loved the horseradish crème fraîche because it wasn’t too strong and it allowed the flavor of the meat to stand out. I ended up eating quite a few of these throughout the night!

One of my surprise favourites of the night were the deep-fried mac and cheese bites with cheese fondue dip. I’m normally not a mac and cheese fan (I know I know I’m weird) but these were delicious. The cheese fondue dip was the best past and the deep-fried batter was light but nice and crunchy.

Another great item was the shrimp sautéed in butter and herbs. This was probably the best shrimp I’ve ever tasted. The piece was quite large and tasted very fresh. The butter herb sauce was excellent and totally made the dish.

My favourite dessert of the night was the baked alaska. The glasses were layered with a fruity sorbet, chocolate ice cream and a meringue type topping. These little desserts had a great contrast of rich creamy flavors and tart fruitiness and everyone around me seemed to really enjoy them.

Overall I had a great evening and enjoyed some super yummy food and met some great people! Check out Kevin (604foodtography), Rick (Rick Chung), and Janice’s (Good Eat) blog posts about the event too. The servers were friendly and the restaurant looked great. I am excited to come back and try Black and Blue’s normal menu sometime soon to see what that will be like and hopefully they will post a menu online soon.
