Yamato Sushi

On Davie street right near Emery Barnes Park there is a little hole in the wall sushi place called Yamato Sushi. The inside of the store is super tiny and it’s nothing fancy but the food is surprisingly delicious and affordable. The first time I went here I went for lunch and I got a bento box.

I got Box A ($6.50) which consists of chicken teriyaki, a California roll, gyoza, rice, miso soup, salad and tempura. I thought that the portions for everything was going to be skimpy because it was so cheap but the portions surprisingly big. I was so full from the bento box and it was such a great deal. The chicken teriyaki was served on top of rice so it was very filling. The chicken has a nice crispness on the outside and the sauce was your standard teriyaki sauce. The California roll tasted really fresh and was a good size. The gyoza weren’t your typical gyoza it was a deep fried version. I liked them but I think I prefer regular gyoza more. The tempura was good it had all of the standard tempura veggies and shrimp and the veggies were soft inside (I hate under cooked vegetable tempura). The salad wasn’t that great and I didn’t eat much of it and the miso soup was your typical miso soup. This bento box is a great deal and I would highly recommend it for a cheap but good lunch.

I went back again and I ordered sushi special A ($6) for takeout. This special came with a california roll, a yam tempura roll, tuna maki, miso soup and salad. The restaurant was really busy so I just went to the park to eat. Once again I was surprised by how much food I got for $6. Everything was really fresh and I enjoyed all of the rolls. Once again this is an amazing deal and two people could easily share this for a meal.

Tip:

The store is really tiny and gets very busy so be prepared to wait or get takeout.

Recommendation:

Yes, it’s a great place for cheap sushi and bento boxes.
