Urban Gate

A few weekends ago I went to Urban Gate restaurant for lunch with Knowlton the Burger Knight. We have been meaning to go here for a while to try their Persian/Western style food and we finally got around to doing it. Burger Knight made sure we went on a Sunday because their daily special is a $6 prime rib burger with fries. I was excited to try it because I haven’t been to many Persian restaurants and I wanted to look around the Persian grocery store next door that they also own. The grocery store is stocked full of authentic Persian food and they have some really cool stuff in there that you can’t get anywhere else. They also claim to make all of the food in the restaurant from items in their store.

The inside of the restaurant is nice, it has lots of spacious booths beside the windows. They also have a cute patio right on the High Street near Coquitlam Centre. There was a variety of different kebabs and Persian options on the menu. I decided to go with the Jujeh Kebab ($13) which is a grilled chicken kebab in a lemon, yogurt, and saffron marinade.

My chicken kebab came with a garden salad, rice, and a bbq tomato. The chicken was super tender and really picked up the flavors from the marinade. The portion of chicken was pretty impressive especially since I find some kebabs can be skimpy on the meat. The garden salad was basic but very fresh with a nice creamy ranch style dressing.  I loved the rice that came with it. I don’t know how they made it but it was so delicious I couldn’t stop eating it (even after I was way too full). I normally don’t like tomatoes but I enjoyed the smokey flavor and charred texture of the bbq tomato.

Overall I enjoyed my experience at Urban Gate. I thought the Persian food was delicious and that’s clearly what they excel in. I would like to come back and try some of their other kebabs.

Thank you for the kind words! You must come back to try more kebabs! I suggest splitting the Persian Sampler with someone and ask for extra rice (soo good hey??). My favourite happens to be the Koobideh (ground beef). Its so flavourful and juicy.
Thanks for checking us out 🙂

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll be sure to give it a try next time I’m in the area 🙂
