Memphis Blues is a chain of Southern barbeque restaurants that has several locations around Metro Vancouver. There are actually a few different styles of American barbecue; the Memphis style is characterized by both wet and dry ribs and barbecue sandwiches.
I visited the location on West Broadway for lunch one day while I was working in the area. The restaurant has a dark and homey atmosphere and the second you walk in the door you are greeted with the delicious aroma of smokey meat.
For my lunch I went with the large rib ends sandwich. For only slightly more money you get a couple extra ounces of meat. I couldn’t resist that offer.
The large size sandwich definitely had a lot of meat on it. You don’t see rib ends on many menus around Vancouver, so when a restaurant serves them I feel compelled to order them. The meat was tender and it had a very smokey flavour. The sauce that smothered the sandwich had a dark, sweet, molasses taste.
The sandwich was served with a side of coleslaw and baked beans. Both of the sides were good. I especially liked the light and tangy coleslaw because it was a nice contrast to the heavy sandwich. The beans were also good, but I found their flavour to be very similar to the sauce on the sandwich, which I got a bit sick of by the end of the meal.
Overall I was pretty satisfied with my lunch from Memphis Blues. Some of the barbecue menu items can get expensive, but the sandwiches are reasonably priced and filling.
Yes, for a good barbecue sandwich.
