Tacofino Commissary is a Baja style Mexican restaurant located in East Vancouver on Hastings. The owners also have two food trucks that operate downtown during the summer (the orange truck and the blue truck).
I fell in love with the food they serve at their trucks, so the commissary restaurant has been on my list of places to visit for a long time. I finally got the chance to come with my friend Melissa for lunch.
The pork jowl taco ($6) is topped with cabbage, fried shallots, pineapple salsa, and sriracha sauce.
The pork was tender and meaty. I liked the bit of texture that the fried shallots added to the taco. The pineapple salsa was very sweet and it overpowered some of the other flavours in the taco. I liked it, but if you don’t like pineapple or mixtures of sweet and savoury, you won’t like this taco.
The fish taco ($6) is made with tempura battered and fried ling cod, cabbage, chipotle mayo, and salsa fresca.
This fish taco is the whole reason I wanted to come here and it didn’t disappoint. The fish is fried perfectly and it has a wonderful crisp texture. The cod is super fresh tasting and it has converted me from the belief that halibut is the only good fried fish.
The chipotle mayo is the other key component of this taco. It has such a big pop of creamy flavour that makes this taco that much better. I feel like I could talk about this fish taco for an hour. You just need to try it, but be warned, once you do no other fish taco will compare.
The torta ($9), which is a Mexican sandwich, was filled with beer-braised beef, pickles vegetables, cilantro, and black garlic aioli.
The beef braised beef was melt in your mouth tender and still slightly pink in the middle. They piled up the meat on the bun, so any carnivore will love this sandwich.
The pickled vegetables were reminiscent of a Vietnamese sub. I couldn’t taste them very much, because the meat and garlic aioli were abundant, but they added a nice fresh crunch to the sandwich. I loved the piles of fresh cilantro on the bun because cilantro makes everything better.
My experience at Tacofino was so great it made me sad that I haven’t visited sooner. The food is fun, creative, and delicious. This is a wonderful East Van neighbourhood gem and I will definitely be back for more tacos.
They often have a 2 tacos for $10 special during lunch hours.
Yes, for blow your mind fish tacos and great fusion Mexican.
