The second season of Recipe to Riches began last week with the first episode being the cakes, puddings, and pie competition. I was excited that the honey cheese pastries beat out the Battenberg cake and the chocolate butterscotch pots de creme because they sounded like a more exciting sweet option.
This weekend I picked up Jason’s mini cheesy bees’ nests from the Real Canadian Superstore to try them out. The package comes with 12 bite sized tarts that you bake in the oven for 12 minutes.
These little tarts packed a lot of flavour. The buttery phyllo pastry shell was light and crisp. The inside of the shells were filled with a honey cream cheese mixture, mixed berry jam, and topped off with shredded mozzarella. The honey cream cheese mixture was delightfully rich and creamy. The berry jam was a good complement to the cheese mixture because it added a bit of tart sweetness. I don’t think the shredded mozzarella on top was necessary since the filling was already rich and cheesy.
These tarts were tasty and made a nice sweet snack. They are very rich, so you don’t need to eat a lot of them. These are worth trying if you have a sweet tooth. You can buy these at stores that sell President’s Choice products. If you want to try making them at home the recipe is on the Food Network Canada website.
