Vij’s Railway Express is one of the new additions to the Vancouver street food scene brought to you by Vikram Vij of Vij’s restaurant and the Gourmet Syndicate brand that operates the Roaming Dragon food truck. Vij’s Railway Express serves Indian style street food with a menu that changes frequently.
This is the most impressive food truck in Vancouver in terms of appearance and ambiance. The truck is beautiful. They have incense burning, music playing, and Vij himself is often on the street greeting and chatting with customers.
I came here on a lunch break with my Dad recently because we have both been interested in trying this truck.
I ordered a ginger lemon drink ($3.50). The drink is made with a lemon ginger syrup and sparkling water. It was refreshing and tart with a subtle ginger flavour.
For my lunch I ordered the halibut in coconut masala curry ($11.50). This comes on a bed of rice and with a slice of naan.
The pieces of halibut were small, but they were moist and seasoned to perfection. The outside was a bit crisp and the flakey fish pieces melted in your mouth. The curry sauce was light and mild with a creamy coconut flavour.
There was a lot of rice in the bowl and it soaked up the curry sauce nicely. The naan was soft and it had a texture that was similar to a pita.
My dad ordered the lamb kebab that comes wrapped in a naan flatbread with seasoned veggies on the side. I had a bite of the wrap and it was bursting with flavour. Lamb isn’t one of my favourite meats, however, this was succulent and had a wonderful aroma of spices.
Vij’s Railway Express is one of the pricier food trucks downtown, however, the flavours and execution of their food is top-notch. They truly embody gourmet street eats and they provide excellent customer service.
Yes, for a gourmet street eats experience.
