Sushiyama is a popular sushi joint located on East Broadway near Kingsway. I was in the area and looking for lunch, so I popped in for a bento box. The inside of the restaurant doesn’t really have any ambiance, but it was very busy, especially for later in the afternoon.
I ordered the sushi and tempura box, which comes with a BC roll, assorted tempura, a salad, miso soup, deep-fried gyoza, and 5 pieces of assorted nigiri.
The salad was decent for a bento box salad and they used colourful mixed greens with a light tangy dressing. The tempura was heavily coated in batter and thicker than what most restaurants do. I generally prefer pan-fried gyoza and I found these deep-fried gyoza a bit bland.
The BC roll was stuffed with lettuce, BBQ salmon skin, and cucumber. The end of the rolls had too much filling in them and I ended up having an embarrassing moment when I choked on one them. I wouldn’t order this roll again.
For the nigiri I got a piece of salmon, tuna, tamago, shrimp, and yellowtail. I’ve never tried tamago before (it’s a Japanese style omelette), but I enjoyed the smooth texture and mildly sweet taste. The tuna, salmon, and shrimp were good, however, the yellow tail fish was so tough I couldn’t bite through it.
My overall experience at Sushiyama was hit and miss. Some of the items were good, but I was disappointed by the sushi roll and gyoza. I would give them another chance if I was going to order off the menu, but I wouldn’t get a bento box again.
No, there are better bento boxes in Vancouver.
