There is a famous bakery on the island called Leonard’s Bakery that specializes in malasadas, which are essentially a Portuguese donut. Leonard Jr’s is a food truck owned by the bakery and they sell hot malasadas out of the truck. One of the trucks is located right near the premium outlets mall so we stopped in for a snack before we started shopping.
I originally found out about these malasadas from an episode of The Best Thing I Ever Ate and knew I had to try them when I came to Hawaii. We ordered a dozen of the haupia filled malasadas and had to wait a few minutes for them to fry them up fresh. The haupia filling was a coconut milk flavoured custard and was cool, creamy and mildly sweet. The malasadas were warm and soft and covered in sugar. These were not as heavy as I thought they would be because the custard wasn’t super sweet or over bearing.
Overall I thought the haupia malasadas were completely delicious. I’ve never quite had a donut like this and they are definitely worth trying. The haupia filling is also a must try because it was so creamy and unique.
Recommendation:
Yes, for a delicious treat.
