There is a newly developed little strip mall across from our hotel and we went over there to get some lunch. We had heard good things about the Ko ‘Olina Hawaiian BBQ so we decided to go there. It’s small inside with just a few tables but they have a massive menu that is overwhelming. They have a variety of BBQ meats and a bunch of plate lunch and bento box combinations.
I chose the BBQ mixed plate which came with BBQ chicken, teriyaki steak, and BBQ short ribs, two scoops of rice, macaroni salad and some coleslaw all for $9.50. This dish can easily feed two people because there is so much meat piled into it although you can’t really see that from the picture. The chicken thighs were juicy and tender and they tasted like the had a light soy marinade. The BBQ short ribs had a great flavour but they were a little too fatty for me. The teriyaki steak was my personal favourite. The teriyaki sauce was mildly sweet and delicious. The steak was sliced super thin and was tender. The rice was nothing special but the two scoops were massive. I normally don’t like macaroni salad but this version was delicious. It was super creamy and it had a mild honey mustard flavour. This meal was super satisfying and filling while being very affordable.
Some of my other family members got the special of the day which was honey garlic chicken with fried saimin noodles ($9). The honey garlic chicken was deep-fried and crispy, garlicky, and good. The saimin noodles were basically like a Japanese yakisoba. The portion of noodles was large and they had a good flavour and chewy texture.
Overall I thought this was a great place for lunch. They have such a wide selection of affordable items and I would like to go back and try more. They also do take out so you could easily take it back to your hotel.
Yes for a cheap, filling, and tasty lunch.
