At SFU Burnaby most of the coffee shops on campus are part of Renaissance Coffee. They offer a variety of coffee, espresso, and tea drinks. They also have lots of prepackaged sandwiches and baked goods like mini cakes, muffins, bars, and croissants. The location I am reviewing is the largest one located in the Cornerstone complex.
I was in need of a quick snack and some caffeine before a midterm so I stopped by Renaissance Coffee on my way to class. I ordered a small soy caramel macchiato and a double chocolate muffin. These two items came to over $7 which I thought was a bit ridiculous, this isn’t Starbucks. Since I was on my way to class I didn’t taste my coffee until I had got there. Once I tasted it I immediately noticed something was wrong with the drink. It was extremely bitter and it had a very strange burnt sour taste. I don’t know if the soy milk was expired or there was something wrong with the coffee but the drink was disgusting and I threw it out. I’ve gotten a caramel macchiato from here before and it did not taste like that.
After my gross coffee I was hoping my muffin would save the day and redeem Renaissance, but it also let me down. The muffin was large, however it was also dry. It tasted like it had been sitting in the case for a couple of days.
I was really disappointed in my experience at Renaissance and I basically threw $7 down the drain. I haven’t returned since this experience and I probably won’t ever be back. Starbucks please come to SFU.
No, the baked goods aren’t fresh and the staff don’t know how to make specialty drinks.
